What Does Cialis Do?

Cialis has been marketed and utilised since 2003 as a medication purposed to treat erectile dysfunction on a one-time or continual basis. It was also later approved as a treatment for the symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. As these conditions are often found together in an individual, Cialis can even treat both conditions at the same time.

Tadalafil functions primarily as a PDE5 inhibitor. This means that the actions of phosphodiesterase type 5, which is an enzyme that catalyses cGMP hydrolysis, can be counteracted by tadalafil.

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

Typically, or in most cases, erectile dysfunction is caused by a medical concern or imbalance. Erectile dysfunction is any form of inability or lowered ability to initiate or maintain a penile erection during sexual activity. This may be caused by psychological factors (performance anxiety, mental illness, or stress), drug side effects (especially with SSRI’s and nicotine), cardiovascular disease, cavernosal disorders, neurological problems, or even hormonal insufficiencies.

During sexual stimulation, the penile arteries, as well as the corpus cavernosum are relaxed, causing an increase of blood flow to the penis. This is what causes an erection. What causes this process to begin though is the synthesis of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP. When endothelial cells and nerve terminals release nitric oxide, this creates cGMP in smooth muscle cells, which begins the increase of blood flow in order to cause the penile erection.

How Tadalafil Works

When tadalafil inhibits phosphodiesterase type 5, or PDE5, the amount of cGMP in the body rises drastically, allowing for increased erectile function. This doesn’t immediately cause an erection though. The reason that an erection is not stimulated upon consumption of the pill containing tadalafil is because the process that causes an erection that begins with the release of nitric oxide is caused by sexual stimulation. For this reason, once the pill is in the blood stream, it should enact its purpose upon sexual stimulation, not prior.

Alternatives to Cialis

There are a few other drugs on the market that promise the same effects as Cialis (tadalafil). These include Viagra (sildenafil) and Levitra (vardenafil). While all three drugs are PDE 5 inhibitors that serve to assist those suffering from one-time or reoccurring erectile dysfunction, tadalafil has an ability that the other drugs do not. Cialis has a significantly longer period of functioning. It is able to last longer in the system. This is because tadalafil has a much longer half-life than vardenafil or sildenafil.

Why Patients Choose Cialis

A half-life is the amount of time a medication takes before it falls to half of its original strength. So, while the half-life of Viagra is four hours, and the half-life of Levitra is between four and six hours, the half-life of Cialis is seventeen and a half hours. This means that the drug is able to remain in a person’s system at least in some part for an average of thirty six hours, making it both more potent and more long lasting than other competitors like Viagra, which typically lasts between five and six hours and Levitra, which can last between ten and twelve hours.
